Arizona governor signs law requiring proof of citizenship to vote for president
Arizona Governor Doug Ducey has signed a law that some lawyers for the Arizona State Legislature believe may be unconstitutional. A 2013 Supreme Court ruling required states to allow voters to cast ballots for federal elections without documented proof of citizenship provided they attested to their citizenship under penalty of perjury. Arizona’s new law, however, will require voters to provide documentation of citizenship as well. Some voting rights advocates think this new law may endanger the ability of approximately 200,000 voters to cast a
Voting Rights ‘Under Siege,’ Judge Says in Tossing Parts of Florida Law
Major portions of a 2021 Florida voting rights law have been struck down by the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Florida. The court’s Chief Judge stated that certain provisions in the bill targeted the voting rights of Black Americans because of the demographic’s tendency to vote with the Democratic party. The court ruled that the state of Florida will now need to seek the federal court’s permission before enacting new laws regarding third-party voter registration, ballot drop-boxes, and interactions with voters
‘Radio silence’: Voting rights advocates push for 2022 Virginia House elections as lawmakers shy away
While local chapters of voting rights advocacy groups such as the NAACP and the ACLU are calling for the Virginia House of Delegates to schedule a new election in 2022 (elections for the Virginia State Legislature usually occur on odd-numbered years), members of the Virginia House themselves have been reluctant to publicly endorse the call. While the ACLU’s suit is to be delayed until the next election cycle, another challenge to the same Republican maps is still being brought this year by an affiliate of the Democratic National Redistricting Commission. US supreme court blocks new Wisconsin voting maps in boost for Republicans
While the US Supreme Court opted not to overturn Wisconsin's new Congressional district maps in a recent case, it did reject the new maps for the two chambers of the Wisconsin State Legislature. The maps had been approved by the Wisconsin State Supreme Court after a dispute between the state’s Republican-dominated legislature and its Democratic Governor. The US Supreme Court has ruled that Governor Tony Evers’ maps do not sufficiently follow the state’s requirement that redrawn maps must not be drastically different from their
