Tarrant County, Texas suffered a severe shortage of poll workers at its March 1st primary and officials are unsure how many eligible voters did not cast a ballot as a result. Two major factors attributed to the decrease in staff are the persistent dangers of COVID-19 - especially for elderly poll workers after the lifting of mask mandates - and the restrictive voting laws recently passed in the state. Some workers reportedly quit because of the increased risk of accidentally committing an election-related felony

The Florida Legislature has passed a bill approving 3 million dollars in funding to create a 25-person office to investigate potential criminal violations of election laws. Voting rights advocacy groups are calling the move unnecessary and hazardous to the rights of voters. A statement released from the Florida chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union claims, “The handful of cases of intentional misconduct that have been prosecuted in the past year demonstrates that the existing system works. After receiving completed surveys from nearly 600 local election officials across the country, the Brennan Center for Justice reports that about 20% of these officials believe it unlikely that they will still be in their current positions by the 2024 elections. One third of those who expect to leave soon reported politically-motivated attacks, harassment, and false accusations as their number one reason.
