Agenda languishing, Democrats press Biden to go it alone

Anxious that their perceived underperformance may depress voter turnout among liberals this November, congressional Democrats are urging President Biden to take unilateral executive action on issues important to their party. Among their key concerns is voting rights. Representative Joyce Beatty (D-OH-3), the Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, says, “…we know the value and importance of preclearance for us.”  “Preclearance” refers to the authority formerly granted to the federal government to evaluate and overrule state election laws if they discriminate against voters based on race. Since a 2013 Supreme Court ruling, the federal government has been stripped of this power and efforts to revive it through Congress have so far failed.
