Robin Lockett and Sonja P. Brookins have edged out several established politicians in the Tampa Bay city council election. The two candidates are the first Black women to compete in a runoff for the citywide council seats in the same election cycle in Tampa’s history. When asked about their electoral success, Locket told reports that it is “historic… It’s a great thing. Who would have thought it?” Brookens responded similarly emphasizing her desire to improve the city saying, “if I can make history while representing the people, that would be just magnificent.”
