With similar demographics and past voting patterns, it appears surprising that Michigan and Ohio had such different electoral outcomes in the recent midterm election. Political analysis suggests that differences in voting registration and ballot initiatives may explain why these two states have begun to diverge. In 2018 Michigan approved same day voter registration and automatic voter registration, meanwhile Ohio requires voters to register nearly a month before election day. These registration laws have led to higher voter participation in elections and registration in general in Michigan, and may be a contributing factor in Michigan’s shift towards Democratic leaders and policies in the last election.
